Hospital and KPI

Hisahiro Abe (hereinafter, Abe River

Have you been born in Frankfurt? What was your major in Goethe University?

Sandra Pereira (Hereafter, Pereira) This is a pediatric doctor (MD: Doctor of Medicine). I think that it became a human-centered way of thinking by directly touching on human’s life. I actually worked 3 years as a clinician. I moved to McKinsey … …. I think that I chose a very different path, what happened? (Lol)

Mrs. Pereira is always asked, Why the person why the doctor became a consultant? (Laugh).

In fact, 40% of McKinsey employees are gatherings of consultants with various backgrounds. McKinsey is a company that values the diversity of the team, and it is because he wanted a person with a career like me to realize the very diversity. I myself jumped into the world of a business consultant from a doctor of a hospital, I learned that the different individuals raise each other’s abilities and create strength as a team.

Abe River-Anyway, why did you want to transform into a business world?

Mrs. Pereira was a college student’s experience. At one time, “KPI (*)” was introduced by the insurance company to the pediatric ward where I worked. The mission of the hospital is to cure the patient’s illness, but suddenly the financial goal has fallen. The director of the hospital was very puzzled because he had never managed the hospital from such a point of view.

Abe River-Hospital is an organization. It is necessary to operate.

Mrs. Pereira Yes. The parties to hospital management are “doctors”, “patients” and “insurance companies”, but doctors do not care about financial matters at all. Insurance companies are involved in the operation.

With the introduction of KPI, we focused on “whether this department and treatment is within budget” although we have operated hospitals mainly for patients. For that reason, I do not know how much important decisions were postponed and unreasonable decisions were made.

Of course, you cannot diagnose the patient just by knowledge of finance. However, if financial restrictions exist, patients will be bent. When I thought that there should be a way to balance the two things “seeing patients” and “running the hospital” somewhere, I got a story saying, “Why do not you try as a consultant?” McKinsey set the light on my inquisitive spirit.
